About Nyakamwe

24 Oct 2008

Nyakamwe is a very likeable gorilla – he is not aggressive, but on the contrary sometimes likes to play.

We also think he is quite a daydreamer as he likes to just look at people who come to visit him with his big gentle eyes – he sort of lies down and rests his chin on his clenched fists and just watches us, watching him.

We can always pick him out easily in the family because he has lots of moles – like little lumps – on his face. There is nothing wrong with the lumps and they don’t seem to bother him.

He is often with Lubutu and he also likes to play a lot with Gato. He is afraid of no one – and he is on the point of becoming of a Silverback, any day!

Nyakamwe’s nostrils

Nyakamwe was the name of a Ranger who died who worked at Rwindi station in the centre of Virunga National Park.

He was one of the bravest Rangers who has ever worked in Virunga, and he died of illness. We named this gorilla after him so as not to forget his courage.
